Designers Series: Amanda Wakeley, OBE

Amanda Wakeley, portraitA couple of months ago, I was invited by the B&C Club to an intimate talk with Amanda Wakeley, multi-awarded designer and OBE, in her beautiful Mayfair flagship store. No need to mention I jumped at the occasion as not only do we offer some of her gorgeous evening dresses on Nothing-to-Wear.com but I was extremely curious to discover the woman who earned an international reputation for creating stylish, supremely luxurious womenswear and accessories.

A former model in 80’s NYC, Amanda has a presence and lights up a room with a smile. She is genuinely warm  and got us under her spell. She told her how she used to work for a Manhattan shop designing the most amazing silk cargo pants, how she learned to design from the scratch, from making mistakes, using maths and geometry… Actually her first design ever was a patchwork skirt she made for a school play and she spent weeks meticulously sawing together the dozens of tiny  fabric swatches.

Amanda Wakeley launched her eponymous label in 1990 by opening a small boutique in Chelsea.

Since that first store, Amanda’s brand has become internationally renowned. She owns a flagship store in Mayfair and other luxury retailers across the globe, Amanda’s brand dominates the luxury fashion industry.

Her clean and sophisticated aesthetic has won her the British Fashion Award for Glamour magazine three times, Scarlett Johansson, Demi Moore, Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet, Kate Beckinsdale and Charlize Theron are amongst her fans.

Amanda has also had the honour of dressing many Royals, most notably The Duchesses of Cambridge, The Duchess of  Sussex, Queen Rania of Jordan and the late Diana, Princess of Wales. In 2010 Amanda was awarded an OBE for her services to the fashion industry.

Expanding into jewellery and bridal wear, there is truly no fashion sector Amanda cannot conquer. Amanda has developed a luxury lifestyle brand which embodies the values of dressing women with effortless, empowering style.  There is a slight difference in the fit and comfort of clothes designed by a woman for a woman. Amanda’s designs elongate the legs, slimmer the waist, masters the bias cut and her clever draped skirts mask what may need to be softened… Her understanding of what a modern woman life is explains her vast success. She brings this across not only in her clothing range but accessory and bridal collection too.

Her rise to business success has entailed negotiating tough challenges as her former business partner bought her ought of her own company, preventing her from using her own name.  She now uses her considerable experience and talent to help raise both funds and awareness for a number of charitable causes, since 1996 she has co-chaired the committee for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer appeal.
